6-Lesson Gigabots

Curriculum for 4th/5th Graders

The current curriculum is designed to be 6 1-hour sessions with 4th and 5th grade students. All the materials are available here on Google Drive.

Each of the six lessons has three main components:

  • Google Slides which are meant for the presentation of the class
  • A Walkthrough for a community volunteer or teacher to use for the class
  • A Lesson Plan for teachers and administrators to know what is being covered in the lesson

The lessons break down as follows:

  • Lesson 1: What is Code? Students discuss the basics of what coding is.
  • Lesson 2: What is a Robot? Students explore the basic components of what makes something a robot, and look at examples of different robots “in the wild”.
  • Lesson 3: Wifi and Motors Students learn how we communicate to the robot in order to control the bot’s drive control (wheeled motors).
  • Lesson 4: Using Sensors and Loops Students learn how coding is built with logical loops, and use that to control the bot’s sensors.
  • Lesson 5: Grabbing Students learn how gears can help motors turn in different directions, and use that to control a grabber arm.
  • Lesson 6: All Together Now Students use the basics they have learned to string together more complex tasks. We also cover careers in CS!
